The Turning

A short movie review for people with short attention spans!!

***Spoilers Possible***

Director

Floria Sigismondi is best known for her directing of music videos for artists such as Marilyn Manson, Sheryl Crow, The Cure, David Bowie, and Katy Perry, she also directed the movie The Runaways about the 1970 all girl punk band of the same name.

Starring

Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), Finn Wolfhard (IT), Brooklyn Prince (The Florida Project), Joely Richardson (Maggie), and Kim Adis (Krypton)

Plot

A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and neice after their parents’ deaths. A modern take on Henry James’ novella “The Turn of the Screw”.

What I Think

This is a horror/psychological thriller about a young teacher who is hired by a man to become a live in home school teacher for a rich family who recently lost the parents. When she arrives at the very impressive looking manor and estate the gates are ominous and unwelcoming. As she approaches the home to knock on the door no one answers so she walks around the perimeter to a green house, that is also very large, and finds the house keeper.

She is directed to the stables where she meets the young girl whom she will be teaching. Later on she meets the older brother who is a tad bit of a sociopathic spoiled creep and as we confirm further into the film a psychopath as well.

There is no shortage of jump scares and paranormal activity in this movie. We get spooky sound, disembodied voices, full body apparitions, and genuine poltergeist activity but we also get deep psychological suspense and a decent amount of WTF!

With that said I was fully prepared to give this movie four stars because it hit some key bullet points that I use as gauges for a good horror movie and then came the twist. This twist dropped the movie a couple of more stars and ruined what could have been a great ending.

Maybe I am looking too far into it or I need to watch the movie again because I may have missed something but this film was an absolute disappointment in my book. So if you think I missed something, please leave it in the comments and I may possibly change my mind about this waste of money and time.

If you really want to enjoy a movie, do not watch “The Turning” any movie would be better than this movie.

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I give this movie 2 of 5 stars.
